John Lennon came up with the idea for this song when Yoko Ono played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" on the piano. He asked her to play some chords backwards and he created a song from what he heard with straightforward lyrics.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison did the vocals, and it is the only song by The Beatles with three singers. They overdubbed their vocals two times to achieve the effect of nine people singing.

Paul McCartney and George Harrison considered this track to be their favourite on "Abbey Road". It took more than five hours to record it preceding with a very intense rehearsal. The sound engineer Geoff Emerick recalled, "They knew they were doing something special, and they were determined to get it right."

The version of this song from the "Anthology 3" album was featured in the trailer for the film "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (2017).
